Student Highlight: Tyler Newlin

Persistence in academics and extracurriculars sets Tyler Newlin apart as a data science major. Meticulous in his craft and dedicated to perfection for the Development Team at the Digital Corps, Tyler excels with a team and coworkers who support him in all his endeavors.

With that support, Tyler overcame his most challenging project, which involved repeated trial and error.

“Creating a dashboard that academic advisors use to get performance insights on students. We had to spend a lot of time and effort figuring out how to build a system with just general structure and mock data. It required a lot of trial and error as well as a lot of communication.”

Working with others comes easy to Tyler, especially finding motivation in other’s work, as he gets a better perspective on how to solve problems.

As the Development Team GA, Tyler appeals to the mix of creativity and logic that he can bring to his ideas. Appreciating the creative process, even when his work is not tangible, makes him proud. Tyler describes his learning style as “information gouging.” Watching, reading, and studying detailed supplemental material on the topic at hand for Tyler is what helps him approach a new subject.

When he is at the Digital Corps, Tyler embraces his skill in technology to help others. Learning disciplines of different fields around campus aids in his growth mindset.

“I believe that the purpose of technology is to improve people’s lives, even if it is a small or mundane improvement.”

In his free time, Tyler enjoys rock climbing and painting tabletop game miniatures. He appreciates both, but with his work-to-school ratio, he had to choose one.

“I’ve gotten more into painting miniatures over the past few years after a long hiatus. It’s fun to work on something that requires a lot of attention.”

In addition to the creative outlet, he enjoys being a part of a community and showing off his out-of-work talents. When painting his miniatures, Tyler listens to audiobooks, history podcasts, and is a hobby of game design development. Outside of work and class, he appreciates music, going to concerts or listening to whole albums.

Everything that makes Tyler an integral part of our team at the Digital Corps; his hard work, passion for data science, and leadership over the Development Team does not go unnoticed. We are excited to see his career flourish after graduation.
